At the height of the second nationwide oil embargo of the 1970s, metro area residents were looking for a way to get rid of their large gas guzzling cars. Goodwill Industries was only too happy to help, and in 1978 we became the first nonprofit organization in the nation to begin accepting vehicle donations. In the first year, five vehicles were donated to us. In the past six years, however, more than 24,000 vehicles have been donated to Goodwill and resold at public auction to support our employment, job training and placement programs for people with disabilities and disadvantages in the greater Washington and Baltimore metropolitan areas.
